Apart from public appearances (shown here is the 'public joining in' part of the Rhythms of the City event in Leeds several years ago) there are basically three sort of events associated with Belly Dance. These are classes, hafla's and workshops. From this site you can access the information we have about those in our area. Please note that these are NOT comprehensive lists. We only know about events that we're in touch with, or informed about.

If you can't see something for your area it does not necessarily mean that there is nothing going on. You should look around in libraries or contact your local Education Authority or College. Alternatively you could contact us using the e-Mail address at the bottom of the page and we will try to put you in touch with a local teacher, if we know of one in your area.

Classes

There are plenty of classes, usually on an evening, where you can learn the basics of Belly Dance. Introductory classes, suitable for the absolute beginner, are often complimented by 'improvers' classes for those who have gained some skills. Many of the classes are associated with Education Authorities and happen on their premises. A typical class will last from 60 to 90 minutes.

Haflas

A Hafla is an Belly Dance 'party'. Dancers of all levels of skill get together to have a good time. The usual arrangement is that you bring a little food along and just join in. There's often improvised dancing, and there can be some set-piece displays by groups or individuals. There may be 'live' drumming, if you're lucky, and some even have a souk (a bazaar, you know - things for sale!).

Workshops

These are usually more advanced teaching events, though they can sometimes be suitable for beginners, which cover a more specific subject. (Beginners: check when you're booking - look for 'open' level or 'beginners' workshops) Different styles of dance are taught, and the group are often taught a complete new dance, or new technique to use when improvising. A typical workshop lasts from 2 to 4 hours, but some can last longer.
